I'm Needing Adoptive Parents Advice

Last Friday marked the one year mark that I got to hold Diezel and Xia for the first time. Our "Gotcha" day. I want to celebrate. I just don't know how or what to do. Do you treat it like a birthday and have cake/presents? I really need your input/suggestions.

Our daughter is only 14 months old so our first Gotcha Day was low key - a day of running errands I think. I think for us in the future I would like to mark the day somehow, but I've thought about presents etc and we're not really that kind of family, but I also wonder how that would go for other kids that we plan on having (#1 was adopted, others not yet made)? I personally feel like Gotcha Day should be a day to celebrate the family, not just a child(ren). Why not take some time to do something together as a family, even if it's pizza and a movie at home, something that over the years everyone will look forward to? Just something where everyone stops and celebrates the day that the family grew. I think that's what we'll do as our family gets older and there's more understanding.

Today is my oldest son's gotcah day. Five years ago I held him in my arms for the first time and was finally a mom. We tell him his story and he chooses a meal. We are sending a treat to school today for him to celebrate with his class.

We eat Chinese or Russian food (depending on the child whose gotcha day it is), sing "Happy Adoption Day!" (quite boisterously--since we do it 4 times a year, we know it quite well now), and give the child a small gift that is signifciant to their adoption or homeland (Chinese doll, adoption book, etc.)

We have a special dinner and talk about that special day. For our family it's a tough one because our oldest is bio and sometimes feels left out because he wasn't adopted...lol...never thought that would be an issue. 2 of our domestic adoptions were at birth so their gotcha day is like the same day they were born :) Our other 2 have definite gotcha days sooooo, we've created a 'special' gotcha day for all of them and we've kept it simple by having a special dinner :) We'd love to do more but have to be sensitive to our other kiddos. Hugs!

Did you see my Gotcha Day post in December? If i knew how to link it to you, I would but my computer skills suck. We cook Russian Food, invite a few family members to join us and generally make Nick feel special. He gets to use "The Red Plate." It is always fun!! The older kids love it too.

Sorry I'm so late on this, but here are a couple of posts from our last two years that explain what we do and why. HTH.

BTW, I'm sooooooo jealous that you get to go to Uganda. It just wasn't God's timing for me this time around.
